how much is nintendo switch

The amount of money you have to pay for a Nintendo Switch depends on the model you are buying and the part of the world you live in. At the time of the launch, two different Switch bundles were made available. One had a grey-colored Joy-Con and the other one had a blue and neon red Joy-Con.

The company had intended to sell the product at a slightly higher price range but felt it might alienate a certain section of prospective customers. Therefore, it was decided that Nintendo Switch will be launched in different countries at reasonable rates.

To make the rates accessible to most consumers and feasible for the company, Nintendo decided not to provide any extra or complimentary games, hardware or tools along with the Switch. Only the necessary devices were provided and that helped the company in cutting down costs.

A Nintendo switch was sold for ¥29,980 in Japan, A$469.95 in Australia, GB£279.99 in the United Kingdom and US$299.99 in the United States. The price in the European market varied across different territories.

If you plan to buy a Nintendo Switch today, it will cost you around $299. This is the price of the console. If you want to fully experience all the wonderful things the Nintendo Switch can offer, you will have to invest in a few more things. This is not a console where the games come pre-installed. You have to pay separately for the games.

The device offers a storage space of 32 GB. If you want more storage space to store more games, you can invest in a microSD card. There are many more accessories you can buy to have a great playing experience. We shall discuss them but before that, let’s first gather some idea about what a Nintendo Switch is all about.

What is a Nintendo Switch?

A Nintendo Switch is a console that is used to play video games. It is developed and manufactured by Nintendo, a video game and consumer electronics company based in Japan and spread across different countries of the world. The Nintendo Switch was launched on March 3, 2017, and was made available for sale and purchase in most countries at the same time. The Nintendo Switch set or package included a Switch console, two Joy-Con controllers along with compatible straps, a dock, a Joy-Con grip, an HDMI cable and an AC power adapter.

A hand-held version of the switch was launched on September 20, 2019, and named Nintendo Switch Lite. It is a hybrid console that is compatible with consoles that are set up at home and it’s a portable device. It has a Joy-Con controller that is wireless. The controller features directional analog sticks and standard-sized buttons. These make the various functions associated with the switch like grip input, quick feedback and motion sensing more accessible. The Nintendo Switch can be connected to either side of the console to enable hand-held operation. If you are in favor of a more traditional setup, you can attach it to a grip accessory.

It can also be used as a standalone device in your hand and can be accessed by multiple players at the same time. A software that comes with the switch gives you access to a large number of online games. The only thing you need is a good internet connection. Apart from this, it also has wireless ad hoc connectivity with different kinds of consoles. Software and games by Nintendo Switch are distributed both physically and online.

You get these on ROM cartridges and if you prefer buying it online, you can go to the Nintendo e-Shop to purchase it. While Nintendo Switch was made available for commercial sale and purchase in early 2017, its first glimpse was shown to the world on October 20, 2016. When it was being developed, the manufacturer was struggling to come up with the right name for it and referred to it by its code name NX. Sometimes, the best ideas come to our head when we are going through a crisis. That is what happened with Nintendo.

In the year 2014, the company’s annual report reflected the fact that it was going through severe losses. The company decided to focus on developing something that would make a big splash in the mobile gaming and hardware space. Nintendo Switch was a result of that idea. When it finally arrived in the market, being an eighth-generation console, it faced direct competition from the likes of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The company had estimated a sale of two million units in the first month but it went far beyond those estimated figures by selling almost three million units. In early 2018, Nintendo Switch turned out to be the most sought-after home console in major territories like the United States and Japan. The latest sales figure, dating back to September 2020, state that 68 million units have been sold all across the globe.

Is the Nintendo Switch Hardware any Good?

An electronic device is as good as the hardware it comes with. Since the Nintendo Switch is a hybrid video game console, the package it comes with consists of a variety of hardware components that make it work equally well as a home console and a device that can be carried outdoors. Here is a look at the features of its primary hardware.

Console

The main console is powered by a battery and has a tablet-like structure to it. The LCD screen is 6.2 inches wide and the console weighs 297 grams. The LCD screen comes with a multi-touch feature and boasts of the innovative haptic technology developed by Immersion Corporation. You can play games and watch visual content at a resolution of 1280×720 pixels.

The console features stereo speakers, a USB-C port, a 3.5 mm audio jack and a sturdy kickstand on the rear end. You get a good number of slots to insert a game card. There is also a microSD card slot situated at the bottom of the kickstand. The Switch console has as many as three buttons (two volume buttons and a power button) that are placed at the top of the unit. There are rails on either side of the console that can be used to connect the Joy-Con controllers with the Switch unit.

You can easily control the brightness levels using the ambient light sensor. The Switch gives you the scope to use three gameplay modes. The first one is the TV Mode which helps you connect and play content on a television set. The Tabletop Mode enables you to place the console on the top of a table using the kickstand. That will help you indulge in a shared gaming experience with your friends.

If you prefer the experience of using it as a tablet, you can switch to the Handheld Mode. Depending on which mode you have opted for, you will have to position the console in the dock, extend the kickstand or get it connected to or detached from the Joy-Con. You must remember that some games are designed specifically to be played in a particular mode.

Dock

The console can be positioned with the dock either with the Joy-Con attached or without it. It is a docking station consisting of electrical connectors that help in connecting the console to a unit supplying power. It also helps in connecting the console to a TV through an HDMI cable that would enable the production of audio or video output. The dock features one USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports. After being docked, the console can support a frame rate of 60 frames per second and 1080p resolution. Based on the game you are playing, the resolution might vary at times. It weighs 327 grams and is very easy to operate.

Joy-Con

The Nintendo Switch features a set of two controllers referred to as Joy-Con. As standalone entities, they are known as Joy-Con R and Joy-Con L. The side rails are used to connect the Switch console to the controllers with the help of a locking system.

There is a small-sized button at the bottom of the Joy-Con which enables you to detach it from the rest of the unit. After detaching it, it can be either used by a single or multiple players. A Switch console can support as many as eight Joy-Con connections at any given point in time. Once you detach it, you have to place straps at either ends of the Joy-Con. You are also provided with a charging grip that makes it easy to connect a USB-C cable.

Pro Controller

The Switch is compatible with a controller known as Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. This wireless controller enables you to get connected to the Switch through Bluetooth.

Accessories You Can Buy Along With The Nintendo Switch

One of the things that makes the Nintendo Switch extremely popular is the fact that it supports a large number of accessories that would make your gaming experience all the more exciting and fruitful. While the Switch unit will continue to be the primary console element, the accessories will enable you to do a vast number of interesting things with the unit.

If you play racing games extensively, you might want to invest in a Joy-Con wheel, a device that resembles a steering wheel and can act like one when you drive your car or ride your bike in a particular game. You can also buy standalone docks that offer an HDMI cable and a power adapter.

Certain online and offline stores also provide the buyer with screen protectors and a case to cover and keep the device in. You can also connect a keyboard through the USB slot. If you subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online service, you can have access to many SNES and NES games.

In early 2018, the company announced the launch of Nintendo Labo, a platform that was designed by keeping the needs and expectations of children in mind. Nintendo Labo brings together games and some interactive cardboard projects for children under one roof.

This setup is referred to as Toy-Con. There is a software that will provide you with all the instructions you need to construct Toy-Con and the interface you require to control it. From a remote control to drive your car in the game to a fishing rod that lets you experience the joy of fishing, you get a wide range of interesting tools to experiment with.

Specifications

The Nintendo Switch utilizes a system-on-chip that has been developed by Nintendo with support from Nvidia. The chip plays a vital role in ensuring that the graphics you see while playing the game are coherent. It was designed to provide gamers the kind of fulfilling experience they go through while playing a game on a laptop or a personal computer.

It also ensures that the Switch delivers a solid performance but without consuming too much power. The Switch is compatible with Wi-Fi 5 and can be connected to eight consoles at the same time. When you use it in portable mode, you have to take the support of a Lithium-ion rechargeable battery.

When you switch to TV mode, you have to use a USB LAN adapter for connectivity purposes. The battery life largely depends on the software you are using. You can charge the battery using a USB-C connector or when it is still inside the dock.

Final Words

The Nintendo Switch is a very innovative and high-utility gadget from a company that has time and again come up with products that have offered something new to people who invest in technology and have paved the way for other companies to do something similar in that space.

Nintendo is the company that has to its credit some of the most popular games out there in the market like Mario, Splatoon, Donkey Kong, Metroid and Animal Crossing among others. These are the games you find on a device like Nintendo Switch, which is the brainchild of the same company.

Apart from the games Nintendo has developed and has exclusive rights to, you get to choose from a wide array of games developed by other companies and that is available on this device. Because of this factor, it has been dubbed as an extremely inclusive console that completely justifies the amount you spend in buying it.
